Free Drawdown Recovery Calculator

A free drawdown recovery calculator with no login. Enter a drawdown percentage to see the gain required to get back to breakeven, alongside a reference table and chart for common drawdowns — a clear reminder of why deep drawdowns are so costly.

Inputs

%

Percentage lost from the peak (0–99).

Gain to recover a 25.0% drawdown

33.33%

Required gain = drawdown ÷ (100 − drawdown). The deeper the drawdown, the disproportionately larger the gain needed to get back to breakeven.

How it works

After a drawdown of d percent, your remaining balance is (100 − d) percent of the peak. To return to the peak you need to gain back the lost portion relative to that smaller base.

Required gain % = d ÷ (100 − d) × 100. This grows non-linearly: small drawdowns are easy to recover, but large ones require outsized gains.

Example calculation

  • 10% drawdown → 10 ÷ 90 = 11.11% gain to recover.
  • 50% drawdown → 50 ÷ 50 = 100% gain to recover.
  • 75% drawdown → 75 ÷ 25 = 300% gain to recover.

Frequently asked

How much gain do I need to recover a drawdown?

Required gain % = drawdown ÷ (100 − drawdown) × 100. A 10% drawdown needs 11.11%, a 25% drawdown needs 33.3%, and a 50% drawdown needs 100%.

Why does the required gain grow so fast?

You recover from a smaller balance, so each further loss makes the climb back disproportionately steeper. The chart makes that curve obvious.
