How it works
Position sizing translates a risk budget into a lot size. First the tool works out how much money you are risking: risk amount = account balance × (risk % ÷ 100).
It then divides that risk amount by the money-per-pip of one position: suggested lots = risk amount ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value per standard lot). Pip value per standard lot (100,000 units) is $10 for most USD-quoted pairs on a USD account, and is derived automatically when the quote currency matches your account currency.
Example calculation
- Balance $10,000 · risk 1% · stop loss 25 pips · EURUSD · USD account.
- Risk amount = 10,000 × 1% = $100.
- Pip value per standard lot (EURUSD, USD account) = $10.
- Suggested lots = 100 ÷ (25 × 10) = 0.40 lots.
Frequently asked
Is this position size calculator free?
Yes. It is completely free and requires no login. Everything runs in your browser and none of your inputs are stored.
How is the suggested lot size calculated?
Risk amount = balance × risk %. Suggested lots = risk amount ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value per lot). The result is an estimate based on the values you enter.
Why do I sometimes need to add a price or pip-value override?
Pip value is exact when the pair's quote currency matches your account currency (e.g. a USD account trading EURUSD). For other pairs a conversion rate is needed, so the tool asks for the pair price or a manual pip-value override.
Does this place trades on my MetaTrader account?
No. It is an educational calculator only. It never connects to a broker, places orders or provides trading signals or advice.
